Are you in Venice, trying to let your kids enjoy some of the city’s spirit with an activity suitable for their age? Are you trying to throw an unusual birthday party? Are you a teacher, wishing that your pupils learn something about Venice? Then we’ve got something up your alley: our courses on mask making, during which you will create your own mask!
A short course on how to make your own Venetian mask
The courses we’ve outlined for children are a real discovery game about masks, because children will uncover their secrets – hereby learning a real Venetian tradition from a real Venetian craftsman – but they’ll do it in a funny and playful way.
The afternoon they’ll spend at Kartaruga’s, lasting 3 hours, will therefore be a joyful one. At first, they will see how a papier-mâché mask is made, because our teachers will show them the various production stages.
But then children themselves will become the key players of the lesson, because they will choose the animal mask they like the most and decorate it as they prefer, using the colours and trimmings put at their disposal.
Afterwards, we will take them into fairyland, into the world of Aesop’s fables, the Greek writer who, although he lived in the 6th century B.C., composed 358 fables with a still well-founded moral value. Each of his fables, indeed, has an educational aim because, starting from a situation taken from real life, it provides a practical lesson.
And the protagonists of many of these tales are animals, so children will have a chance to experience an activity deeply connected to masks: acting. The group will therefore perform one of these fables, using their brand-new masks.
For whom are our courses meant?
The courses on mask making techniques and decoration are meant for small groups of children, namely from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 12 kids, from both kindergartens and primary schools, that is from 5 to 10 years old. Schools, too, can indeed organize a visit to our workshop.
And finally, last but not least: each child will bring his, or her, own mask back home!
Kartaruga’s mask making courses for children will take place on different days and will begin in March 2015.
The course is divided into three stages:
- how a papier-mâché mask is born, created and decorated;
- decorate the mask you’ve chosen;
- wear your own mask and perform a fable;
The price for each child varies according to the number of participants and includes the necessary material to decorate masks.
